Orbital elements built for Hamiltonian mechanics (variant 4 in Variants of Orbital Elements).

Action-Angle Variables

  • Hamiltonian mechanics: action-angle variables
    • Actions = momenta
    • Angles = coordinates
  • Canonical elements come in conjugate pairs (an action and its angle)

Delaunay Elements

  • Actions:
    • 𝐿=√𝜇𝑎𝐺=𝐿√1−𝑒2𝐻=𝐺cos𝑖
    • 𝐺: total angular momentum, ℎ
    • 𝐻: polar component of angular momentum
  • Angles:
    • 𝑙=𝑀𝑔=𝜔ℎ=Ω
    • 𝑙: mean anomaly, 𝑔: argument of perigee, ℎ: RAAN
  • Same singularities as the classical elements (𝑒=0, 𝑖=0, 𝑖=180°)

Poincaré Elements

  • Built from the Delaunay elements (𝐿, 𝐺, 𝐻 on the right are the Delaunay actions):
    • ℒ︀=𝐿=√𝜇𝑎𝓁︀=Ω+𝜔+𝑀ℊ︀=√2(𝐿−𝐺)cos(𝜔+Ω)𝒢︀=−√2(𝐿−𝐺)sin(𝜔+Ω)𝒽︀=√2(𝐺−𝐻)cosΩℋ︀=−√2(𝐺−𝐻)sinΩ
  • Like Delaunay elements, these are canonical conjugates
  • Like equinoctial elements, these are non-singular
    • 𝓁︀ is the mean longitude, as in the equinoctial set
