Finding the orbital state vector (position, velocity) from the classical orbital elements; the reverse of Orbital Elements from State Vector.

Two Steps

  1. Get position and velocity in perifocal coordinates
  2. Transform from perifocal to ECI with a 3-1-3 Euler angle rotation

Step 1: Perifocal State

  • From Motion in Perifocal Coordinates (Curtis (4.43), (4.44)):
    • 𝐫=𝑝1+𝑒cos𝜃(cos𝜃̂𝐏+sin𝜃̂𝐐)
    • ̇𝐫=√𝜇𝑝[−sin𝜃̂𝐏+(cos𝜃+𝑒)̂𝐐]

Step 2: Rotate 3-1-3 into ECI

  • The perifocal axes are reached from ECI by rotating Ω about ̂𝐊, 𝑖 about the node line, and 𝜔 about ̂𝐖; to go back, apply the negative angles in reverse order:
    • ℛ︀𝑧(−Ω)ℛ︀𝑥(−𝑖)ℛ︀𝑧(−𝜔)
  • Elementary rotation matrices:
    • ℛ︀𝑥(−𝑖)=[1000cos(−𝑖)−sin(−𝑖)0sin(−𝑖)cos(−𝑖)]
    • ℛ︀𝑧(−𝜔)=[cos(−𝜔)−sin(−𝜔)0sin(−𝜔)cos(−𝜔)0001]
    • ℛ︀𝑧(−Ω) has the same form as ℛ︀𝑧(−𝜔)

State Vector from Elements

  • 𝐫=ℛ︀𝑧(−Ω)ℛ︀𝑥(−𝑖)ℛ︀𝑧(−𝜔)[𝑝cos𝜃1+𝑒cos𝜃𝑝sin𝜃1+𝑒cos𝜃0]
  • ̇𝐫=ℛ︀𝑧(−Ω)ℛ︀𝑥(−𝑖)ℛ︀𝑧(−𝜔)[−√𝜇𝑝sin𝜃√𝜇𝑝(cos𝜃+𝑒)0]
  • Worked example: Curtis example 4.7
