The first of the three conservation laws of the Two-Body Problem.

Conservation of Energy

  • Gravity is a conservative force: per unit mass it is the gradient of a potential, 𝐅=−∇𝑉(𝐫)
    • ⇒̈𝐫+∇𝑉(𝐫)=0
  • Dot the equation of motion with the velocity ̇𝐫:
    • ̇𝐫⋅̈𝐫+̇𝐫⋅∇𝑉(𝐫)=0

Corrected from the notes

  • The handwriting writes 𝐅=−∇(𝐫) (the 𝑉 is missing) and ̇𝐫⋅̈𝐫=̇𝐫⋅∇𝑉(𝐫)=0
  • Dotting ̈𝐫+∇𝑉=0 with ̇𝐫 gives a sum equal to zero, as written above; the next line of the notes (dd𝑡̇𝐫⋅̇𝐫2+dd𝑡𝑉=0) uses the sum
  • Both terms are total time derivatives:
    • dd𝑡̇𝐫⋅̇𝐫2+dd𝑡𝑉(𝐫)=0dd𝑡(̇𝐫⋅̇𝐫2⏟12𝑣2+𝑉(𝐫)⏟potential energy)=0
  • The quantity in parentheses is the (specific) energy ℰ︀; the gravitational potential energy is 𝑉(𝐫)=−𝜇𝑟

Specific Mechanical Energy

  • ℰ︀=𝑣22−𝜇𝑟=const
  • Kinetic plus potential energy per unit mass is constant along the orbit
