Connects the physical quantities (𝑟, 𝑣, ℎ, ℰ︀) to the geometric ones (𝑎, 𝑒, 𝑝) of the orbit.

Relation of Physical and Geometric Quantities

  • Dot the eccentricity vector 𝐞=̇𝐫×𝐡𝜇−̂𝐫 with itself:
    • 𝑒2=1𝜇2(̇𝐫×𝐡)⋅(̇𝐫×𝐡)−2𝜇𝑟𝐫⋅(̇𝐫×𝐡)⏟ℎ2+1
  • ̇𝐫⟂𝐡, so |̇𝐫×𝐡|=𝑣ℎ:
    • 𝑒2=𝑣2ℎ2𝜇2−2ℎ2𝜇𝑟+1
  • With 𝑝=ℎ2𝜇 (Orbit Equation):
    • 1−𝑒2=𝑝(2𝑟−𝑣2𝜇)
  • And 𝑎=𝑝1−𝑒2 (Conic Sections):
    • 𝑎=(2𝑟−𝑣2𝜇)−1
  • In terms of energy:
    • ℰ︀=𝑣22−𝜇𝑟=−𝜇2𝑎,𝑎=(−2𝜇ℰ︀)−1
  • The size of the orbit depends only on 𝑟 and 𝑣, not on the direction of the velocity

Speed on the Orbit

  • Solve the semimajor-axis relation for the speed:

Vis-Viva Equation

  • 𝑣=√𝜇(2𝑟−1𝑎)
  • Knowing the position on the orbit immediately gives the speed
  • For a circular orbit 𝑟=𝑎:
    • 𝑣circ=√𝜇𝑎
  • The inverse semimajor axis 𝛼=1𝑎=2𝑟−𝑣2𝜇 is the parameter of the Universal Variables formulation (works for every conic)
