The third conservation law of the Two-Body Problem; it fixes the shape and orientation of the orbit within its plane.

Derivation

  • Notation: |𝐫|=𝑟, ̂𝐫=𝐫𝑟
  1. Cross the equation of motion ̈𝐫=−𝜇𝑟3𝐫 with 𝐡:
    • ̈𝐫×𝐡=−𝜇𝑟3𝐫×𝐡
  2. 𝐡 is constant (Specific Angular Momentum), so the left side is a total derivative:
    • ̈𝐫×𝐡=dd𝑡(̇𝐫×𝐡)
  3. Expand 𝐫×𝐡 with the triple product and 𝐫⋅̇𝐫=𝑟̇𝑟:
    • −𝐫×𝐡=−𝐫×(𝐫×̇𝐫)=−𝐫(𝐫⋅̇𝐫)+̇𝐫(𝐫⋅𝐫)=𝑟2̇𝐫−𝑟̇𝑟𝐫
  4. Compare with the derivative of the unit vector ̂𝐫:
    • 𝜇dd𝑡̂𝐫=𝜇dd𝑡(𝐫𝑟)=𝜇𝑟̇𝐫−𝜇𝑟2̇𝑟𝐫=−𝜇𝑟3(𝐫×𝐡)
  5. So the right side of step 1 is also a total derivative:
    • dd𝑡(̇𝐫×𝐡)=𝜇dd𝑡̂𝐫dd𝑡(̇𝐫×𝐡𝜇−̂𝐫)=0

Eccentricity Vector

  • 𝐞=̇𝐫×𝐡𝜇−̂𝐫=const
  • Its magnitude 𝑒=|𝐞| is the eccentricity
  • Scaled version: 𝐀=𝜇𝐞 (the Laplace / Runge-Lenz vector)
