One formulation of Kepler’s equation that works for every conic: universal anomaly and Stumpff functions (Curtis section 3.7).

Inverse Semimajor Axis

  • From the vis-viva relation 𝑎=(2𝑟−𝑣2𝜇)−1, use its reciprocal instead:
    • 𝛼=1𝑎=2𝑟−𝑣2𝜇
  • 𝛼>0 ellipse, 𝛼=0 parabola, 𝛼<0 hyperbola: no division by zero for the parabola

Universal Anomaly

  • The universal anomaly 𝜒 reduces to a scaled version of each conic’s own anomaly:
    • 𝜒={√𝑎𝐸ellipseℎ√𝜇tan𝜃2parabola√|𝑎|𝐻hyperbola
    • 𝐸: eccentric anomaly, tan𝜃2: parabolic anomaly 𝐷, 𝐻: hyperbolic anomaly (see Kepler’s Equation)
  • Define
    • 𝑧=𝛼𝜒2

Stumpff Functions

  • Series definitions:
    • 𝑆(𝑧)=∑∞𝑘=0(−1)𝑘𝑧𝑘(2𝑘+3)!=16−𝑧120+𝑧25040−𝑧3362880+…(3.51a)𝐶(𝑧)=∑∞𝑘=0(−1)𝑘𝑧𝑘(2𝑘+2)!=12−𝑧24+𝑧2720−𝑧340320+…(3.51b)
  • 𝐶(𝑧) and 𝑆(𝑧) are related to the circular and hyperbolic trig functions as follows (𝑧=𝛼𝜒2):
    • 𝑆(𝑧)={√𝑧−sin√𝑧(√𝑧)3(𝑧>0)sinh√−𝑧−√−𝑧(√−𝑧)3(𝑧<0)16(𝑧=0)(3.52)
    • 𝐶(𝑧)={1−cos√𝑧𝑧(𝑧>0)cosh√−𝑧−1−𝑧(𝑧<0)12(𝑧=0)(3.53)
  • 𝑧>0: ellipse (circular functions), 𝑧<0: hyperbola (hyperbolic functions), 𝑧=0: parabola

Universal Kepler's Equation

  • √𝜇Δ𝑡=𝑟0𝑣𝑟0√𝜇𝜒2𝐶(𝛼𝜒2)+(1−𝛼𝑟0)𝜒3𝑆(𝛼𝜒2)+𝑟0𝜒
  • Curtis (3.49)
  • 𝑟0, 𝑣𝑟0: radius and radial velocity at the initial time; Δ𝑡: time since then
  • Solve for 𝜒 given Δ𝑡 (no special cases for the conic type)
